After we were picked up from our hotel in Rio in a minivan & again took the catamaran we were back in Ilha Grande and this time when we arrived it was sunnier & it didn’t look like there would be any rain. Just our luck last time – but I guess that’s the rainforest for you!
While we were checking into our Pousada we found out that we could pick a movie for them to put in & play in all the rooms for us at a time we set. We let Joe decided & he picked Romeo & Juliet which we set for 10pm so we could all watch after dinner.
For dinner we headed to the Beirgarten Hostel to eat at their per kilo restaurant. In Brazil there are many restaurants where they have a buffet set up, but you put what you want on your plate and then take it to the counter to be weighed & pay when you’re done. This place had been recommended to us by our German friends we met while in Punta del Diablo. The food was fantastic & the beer was cheap. After dinner Zaida took us to a per kilo ice cream place near the beach. Again you grab the ice cream you want in a cup of cone and then put them on the scale – the cone goes in a stand – then you pay for what you get. All in all a good first night with our group!
Since we only had 1 full day on the island & it was sunny we decided as a group do walk to Lopez Mendez. It was just as hot as it had been when we went hiking with Linds & Joe. We stopped on Palmas beach to have a beer, rest & jump in the ocean and then hike the rest of the way to Lopez Mendez. After arriving at Lopez soaked in sweat we all jumped in for a well deserved swim. It was sunny when we arrived so we all took advantage of the time to work on our tans since we weren’t going to have many more opportunities while on our GAP tour. It started to get cloudy around 4 so we decided to make our way back to where the ferry departs to take us back to the town of Abraao. Unfortunately this time the floating restaurant wasn’t open so we couldn’t take our new friends out there for a beer. Luckily though this time it wasn’t raining at all!
After a bit of time relaxing at the Pousada we headed out for some Caipirinhas and then met Zaida for dinner at another one of her recommended restaurants. This time we went to a small off the main road place that had a bit of everything. I had what I think might be the best gnocchi I’ve ever had! We all had some great food & were impressed.
The next morning we were up early (for Dan & I) to get ready and get our 9a ferry back to the mainland where we caught a private minivan onto our next destination – Paraty.
