When we arrived in Paraty is was cloudy, so we all headed out quickly to have a look around town before it started to rain. Paraty is an old colonial town which in the 18th century was an important port for exporting gold. Today Paraty is also known for the many nearby waterfalls, beaches and islands.
After looking around & a few photos Dan & stopped in a cute cafe to try tapioca snacks that are like crepes but stuffed with local Amazonian fruits. They were chewy, but delicious! There was also a number of fruit juices to choose from that were all made fresh from Amazonian fruits we’d never heard of before – they were delicious!
Back to the Pousada for a rest – travelling can be tiring! Then we had an evening boat, caipirinhas, bbq party. It was the 29th - Joe’s 54th birthday, & mine was the following day & our Zaida had arranged for us to have a boat celebration. When we got on the boat there were cloudy skies, but just after we set off it started to rain. Luckily the boat was covered & our captain & cook were able to mix drinks, drive us to a secluded beach for swimming and bbq in the weather. When we arrived at the beach there was only a light rain so it was perfect for swimming. We could see fish jumping and turtles swimming nearby. Dan tried to catch a turtle for me, but no luck. After our swim we had our great food & a fantastic cake that Zaida had picked up for us! The cake even had candles for Joe & I – thanks Zaida!! After cake & quite a few more drinks we moved on & went for another swim in what was now heavy rain which you don’t even notice when you’re in the ocean. A great birthday celebration while on the road!
The next day (My Birthday) after a nice sleep in we headed to nearby Trinidade beach with hopes to catch some sun before heading inland the following day. Unfortunately for us mother nature had something else in mind. It poured rain! We sat at a beach restaurant drinking lots of beer, playing a few games Zaida came up with and getting to know each other a bit better. When the rain let up a bit we made a run for the bus stop to head back to Paraty.
We tried for dinner at a local Thai restaurant which was unfortunately closed for the day, so we headed to a place specializing in Brazilian food and then out for some more ice cream. We all then headed to bed to enjoy our night with a mattress since we had a 24hr travel day the following day!
Happy Birthday to me! 🙂
